LoneLight

An Immersive AR Horror Experience

Bringing Horror Home: Crafting an Unsettling AR Narrative

This project, Lonelight, is an experimental AR horror game that alters one's perception of the familiar - their own living space.

Why augmented reality for this genre? By merging the virtual with real-world surroundings, Lonelight aims to create an unprecedented sense of immersion through visual and auditory perception. Suddenly innocuous rooms and objects take on a sinister new context.

Players begin by scanning their environment to map physical planes and anchor gameplay elements. Upon approaching an ominous painting radiating an unseen aura, creepy singing fills the air and a vignette draws focus to the haunting words - "You are not alone."

As reality begins to splinter, a knife flies violently through the space. A ghostly vase suddenly materializes in the room only to shatter, its spilled ashes whispering "Not your home." Heart-pounding paranormal events escalate from this unsettling introduction.

How did we make this?

We modeled key 3D assets in Maya and Substance Painter, while sourcing some supplemental pieces from the Unity asset store. Much effort went into creating an immersive audiovisual experience that heightens tension and mystery.

Playtesting has been immensely valuable for refining the narrative and effects based on player reactions. It's been fascinating exploring how AR can blur lines between fiction and reality to craft psychologically gripping experiences.

Lonelight is still early in development, but I'm excited to continue expanding its haunting atmosphere and pushing the boundaries of what mobile AR horror can be. Stay tuned for more spine-chilling updates!
